Message you could easily go thousands of miles (literally) with no adverse effects. Just depends on which rings are worn (oil or top), how hard you run the car (especially cold) and how you keep it tuned. This is all assuming ring wear is your issue.

valve wear could be worse, but nothing should break. It would just get to where the cylinder was 'dead' and really run like crap.

yes, throwing a rod is referring to the connecting rod. Usually the rod will break at a weak point and flop around ripping stuff up, or worse puncturing the block itself, which renders a 'no rebuild' situation.
